Syrian interim-President Ahmad al-Sharaa said that Syria seeks to normalize relations with Israel “under the right conditions” according to reporting. US congressman and Trump ally, Cory Mills met with al-Sharaa last week and told Bloomberg that Syria is open to joining the Abraham Accords in exchange for dropping sanctions on the country. The Syrian economy has severely contracted under more than a decade of war and international sanctions. President al-Sharaa has engaged in talks with several former adversaries in an attempt to obtain sanctions relief and hopefully restart the economy. A major concern of the US and other foreign powers is the presence and fate of thousands of foreign fighters, who tend to hold extremist views, who came to Syria to fight in Islamic extremist militant groups. On Thursday, the British government lifted sanctions it had imposed on several Syrian government agencies during the presidency of Bashar al-Assad. In a statement, the British government said “The Syrian people deserve the opportunity to rebuild their country and economy, and a stable Syria is in the U.K.’s national interest.”
