Gazans hold Protest against HamasOn Tuesday, hundreds of Gazans in Bayt Lahiya, Jabalia, and Khan Younis protested against Hamas demanding the militant relinquish control of the enclave after nearly two decades of rule. The protests come after Israel broke its eight-week long ceasefire last week and ramped up military operations in Gaza. Many Gazans hold Hamas responsible for the catastrophic war in which Israel has killed more than 45,000 people. Hamas, which has often resorted political repression and violence to silence challenges, said that the people had a right to protest but denounced what it described as “suspicious political agendas.” Some pro-Hamas voices accused the protesters of being agents of the Palestinian Authority and Zionists. Alaa, a resident of Gaza, wrote on Twitter/X: “Those who took to the streets in spontaneous protests in northern Gaza are the same ones who truly went hungry, who ate animal feed and wild herbs. They are the ones who were crushed by Israeli tanks, their children’s flesh glued to the asphalt during their search for a handful of flour. They are the ones whose children went out to fill a gallon of water and never returned. They are the ones who slept out in the open, under rain and cold, who spent nights and hours under the rubble beside the corpses of their children.”
